Our Commitment to Fair Housing
Welcome to Whatcom LLC and John L. Scott Real Estate are committed to compliance with all federal, state, and local fair housing laws. We believe that everyone deserves equal access to housing opportunities regardless of who they are.
All real estate advertised on this Site is subject to the Federal Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to advertise any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on protected characteristics.
Equal Housing Opportunity
We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the Nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
Federal Protected Classes
Under the Federal Fair Housing Act (42 U.S.C. 3601–3619), it is illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, or financing of housing based on:
- Race
- Color
- National Origin
- Religion
- Sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity)
- Familial Status (families with children under 18)
- Disability (physical or mental)
Washington State Additional Protections
The Washington Law Against Discrimination (RCW 49.60) provides additional protections beyond federal law. In Washington state, it is also illegal to discriminate in housing based on:
- Sexual Orientation
- Gender Identity or Expression
- Veteran or Military Status
- Immigration or Citizenship Status
- Marital Status
- Creed
- Source of Income (e.g., Section 8 vouchers)
- Use of a Trained Guide Dog or Service Animal
Additionally, local ordinances in Bellingham and Whatcom County may provide further protections. We comply with all applicable local fair housing laws.
